Who can apply to IMPRS-CBP?

Are you an ambitious young scientist ready to make your mark in the exciting world of biophysics?

If you are passionate about understanding life at the molecular level and have strong research experience, we encourage you to apply to IMPRS-CBP. Our program seeks exceptional candidates with outstanding academic records, scientific curiosity, and a commitment to rigorous, interdisciplinary research.

Academic Background:

We welcome applicants from a broad range of disciplines, including but not limited to:

Degree Requirements:

Master of Science 

Most successful candidates hold a Master of Science degree from a German or international university.
To enroll, your degree must be:

  • successfully completed

  • of excellent academic quality

  • finalized before the program start on September 16, 2026

Bachelor of Science (Exceptional Cases)

Direct admission with a Bachelor of Science is uncommon in Germany, but exceptional applicants may be considered.

Candidates applying with a Bachelor must demonstrate:

  • outstanding academic performance

  • exceptional research experience

  • evidence of training equivalent to an MSc level

Additional coursework may be required prior to full doctoral admission. The Bachelor’s degree must have a minimum duration of 4 years. Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis.

Research Experience:

Research experience is a key aspect of a strong application.
Highly competitive applicants typically demonstrate:

  • substantial laboratory or computational research

  • bachelor’s and/or master’s thesis work

  • internships or research assistantships

  • evidence of scientific independence or technical expertise

Language Requirements:

Knowledge of German is not required. Our entire program, including research, supervision, seminars, and coursework, is conducted in English.

Formal English proficiency certificates are not required, but can be an advantage.
Your communication skills will be assessed during the interviews
