First Scientific Retreat in Cavtat (Croatia) in May 2023
Exciting talks, lively discussions, career advice and a lot of fun in the beautiful Dubrovnik region
This year, we went to Cavtat in Croatia for our first Scientific Retreat with all our PhD students, our spokespersons Martin Beck and Volker Dötsch and our program coordinator Katharina Kaefer. We enjoyed excellent talks that our PhD students gave on their research projects, and lively discussions in front of the amazing view on the Adriatic Sea. Our spokespersons and program coordinator gave some career advice to the PhD students and reported on their career steps in academia and the field of science management and communication.
One of the highlights was a boat trip to and sightseeing tour in the wonderful city of Dubrovnik.
Furthermore, it was our pleasure to welcome two successful Croatian guest scientists during our retreat in Cavtat. Iva Tolić, group leader at the Ruđer Bošković Institute in Zagreb, Croatia, presented her fascinating research on microtubules and motors in cell division. Ivana Novak, who leads her own reserach group at the University of Split in Croatia, showed her exciting work on mitophagy, a specialized form of autophagy that selectively removes mitochondria. Both of them also gave interesting insights into their career paths and joined some intriguing and fruitful discussions with our PhD students.
